Massive volcanic eruption in Chile: Incredible pictures
Jake Farr-Wharton 8 commentsThe Chaiten volcano in Southern Chile has errupted in all of its fury yesterday, sending a massive plume of ash 30km into the air.
A radius of 30km around the volcano has been evacuated as the plumes of ash descend into the towns blanketing everything in several feet of the thick viscous material.
Many flights from the surrounding regions have been cancelled leaving evacuees and visitors stranded.

The whole thing puts into perspective how small people are - the estimated "power" of a volcano exceeds that of releasing an atomic bomb, every second.

Thursday 8th May 2008 | 11:04 AM...in response to this comment by Rodney. I tried to find a hi res one of the lightning photo, apparently a local storm colided with the plume of ash, which is not that uncommon around erruptions.
