Introducing the Great Facebook Friend Purge initiative

What's it all about than? Put simply, you need to purge a lot of your Facebook friends. Why? The easiest way to explain is by example. But before I continue, I'll first state for the record that this is an initiative set up by yours truly, and I started it in an attempt to improve the Facebook experience. So far it's worked out marvelously, and if this piques your interest then read on.

If you're one of those people who has hundreds of Facebook friends, yet only a small fraction of them are people you really care about or have actually met, then the only way you're going to be able to learn about your real friends activities is by purging all the others.

The Facebook news feed is great. Every time one of your friends does something you'll know. But the problem is that with hundreds of 'fake' friends outnumbering your real friends 100 to 1, posts made by real friends get lost among all the fake friend BS. In other words, the signal is getting lost in the noise.

The initiative is your call to action. Start purging all those fake friends and before you know it everything in your news feed will become relevant and meaningful. Who doesn't want that? I got my number from 137 down to just 49, and Facebook is now useful again.

Set yourself some basic guidelines to follow before casually accepting every 'friend' request. A personal policy to help decide if it's worth your time and energy. For example, your friends may be:

  • People you have (or have had) some form of meaningful or important relationship with
  • People you've cared about in your earlier and or present life
  • People whose lives you are actually interested in being a part of and encouraging
  • And most importantly, all of the above who are people you've actually met in real life

Though if you're the type of person (or narcissist) who thinks that a large friend number actually means something (preferring quantity over quality) then this idea probably isn't for you. But good luck anyway.

For everyone else, feel free to spread the word. It's as easy as going to the site and hitting the 'Like' button. The more people who hit that button the more people will be exposed to this initiative.

And if I'm on your list and we've never met, feel free to un-friend me. I won't be upset - scouts honour :-)

I lost my swift account because someone took offence at diseases "christianity brought you" album.

Seeing I only kept 8 knowbodies and 2 Overseasbodies, I can work out which person did it.

I have of course adjusted a new account to not include sensitive folk.

Ten to 20 FB contacts on general inter-yack is good enough.

I was hesitant to even add some of you guys as friends on facebook! I hate non-communicative friends....

I had to lose a few of mine.. I forgot what folk where, so I just left it.

Swift and Marylin served their purposes tho..

I do something similar--but instead of me deleting these faux-friends, I just troll them till they delete me

I purged more than half my friends last week. Now I'm motivated to kill more!
