Fitter Facebook in a few clicks
Mikey 8 commentsFacebook is good and all, but there are a few things that annoy me. Firstly the adverts, which have never hit the target by serving up adverts for products and services I am not even remotely interested in, and lastly some of the design choices.
So what does any good developer do in this situation? Fix it of course, and that's exactly what I've done. I call it 'Fitter Facebook'.
If you're using Chrome, just hit the big green install button here for and ad-free, design enhanced Facebook experience. Greasemonkey scripts work natively in Chrome so you don't need to do anything else.
Firefox users will need the Greasemonkey plug-in before it can be installed. No big deal but it's required. If you change your mind you can always un-install it.
So what's in it exactly? As mentioned the adverts will disappear, and I've made some design improvements, such as rounded corners and drop shadows on all images and icons, rounded text fields and inputs, a nice hover effect that makes it easier to see where grouped conversations start and end, and a little padding here and there so it feels less cramped.
Here's a before and after screen - hit it for a larger version. Enjoy!
Whooops...Dummy me...I guess there aren't any ads on the Android App...
So how about that Netflix Android app, anyway?

Fantastic work as always, Mike! :-)
...in response to this comment by Friendo. I've looked into blocking adverts in Android and it's actually very easy - but you need to root your phone which is something I haven't attempted yet.
Android has a hosts file which serves up adverts from a certain IP address (can't remember what it is now). All you need to do is edit the file so the adverts are served up from 127.0.0.1 (which is the local IP address), so in other words, the adverts wont appear.
...in response to this comment by Rodney. Thanks dude - and thanks for pimping it on Facebook. Checking userscripts.org this morning and it's have 74 downloads this morning - cool!

So far, facebook has been a dissapointing experience!
In my case? When i re-FB after a few months, it will just be about personal messages. Too many baby bears in this world.

Wednesday 29th September 2010 | 04:40 AMWow Mikey...I can hardly wait... Well, I will try it for sure. I gotta' admit, I get pretty tired of all those women with the photoshopped breasts popping up on the side. I keep beating them down as offensive, repetitive, and misleading, but the next page, there they are again.
Apparently, facebook thinks I need a lot of help finding women. I guess it's lucky for me, that at 57, with a huge dent on the side of my head (see some RL article I wrote about 15 months ago) I still got some game.
Anyway bud...I'll be giving this a go. But of course my next question is:
Have you got an Android Version of this tweek yet?
