Top Saudi cleric OK with paedophilia

The act of child marriage is nothing new particularly in some countries that seem to think it's completely normal, but a top Saudi cleric has just said it's OK to wed girls as young as 10 years old.
This particular cleric is in the spotlight because he refused to annul the marriage of an 8 year old girl to a 47 year old 'man'. The lawyer of the girls mother said "the marriage was arranged by her father to settle a debt with a close friend."
In this authors humble opinion, any Father willing to trade his daughters body and innocence to settle a debt is undeserving of the title 'Father' and certainly shouldn't have the right to breed. Furthermore, any 'man' willing to accept an underage girl as payment isn't a man at all - he's a paedophile.
The cleric is quoted:
"A girl aged 10 or 12 can be married. Those who think she's too young are wrong and they are being unfair to her."
Let's explore that last statement for a moment. Since when has treating the opposite sex fairly (or equally) been on a Saudi mans agenda? Does anyone think a 10 year old Saudi girl will be happy such a decision was made on her behalf while she is being raped by an old man?
While I'm sure this relates to some barbaric ancient old religious Saudi tradition, call me a sceptic but I see it as nothing more than an excuse for old Saudi paedophiles to legally keep having sex with little girls.
...in response to this comment by Zadhman. My facts are fine, and judging by your comment you don't see an obvious problem. I might just put that down to your ignorance, but let me be the first of many who will point out that you've just inadvertently admitted to being OK with paedophilia.
Girls have been known to reach puberty as young as 12. Are you confusing puberty with the age of consent? Or do you really think having sex with 12 year old girls is OK?

That's their tradition as deluded and dumb as it is. I'm sure they draw the line somewhere...maybe at 9 year old girls where it is frowned upon...but 10 year aged is still acceptable.

What sort of life belies these little girls?
A Sudonese friend of mine was circumcised at 9 years old (before she came to Australia) It was done without anaesthetic and by the village witch doctor. She will have to have multiple operations before she can even have some sort of "normal" sex life. I wonder if circumcision is still practiced in Saudi Arabia as well as obviously child mollestation is.
We may have mobile camera/phones, digital TV, and MP3 players but we still treat children and women in the Mid East like shit! It is now 2009!

The action to stamp this act and many other acts out has to come from the people who practice the traditions.
When the Governments who think that the male is dominant over females and children come to realise that being male is not being GOD then you will read and hear about all these things happening well into the next century and beyond.
Thousands of years of practice will not stop until people are willing to stop it! After all this time it doesnt look like they are willing to change.
This happens in many countries not just the Middle East so it is a world matter.
The world should take action against all human rights abuses not just talk about it year after year!

Regardless, it's not like you can just assume that the person is going to break the law as much as you can keep criminals in jail after their term has been served because when you take recidivism rates into consideration, they're likely to offend again.

There is no way she understands what she would be commiting to. Besides, what bothers me more is that the older guy, the community and their religious leaders don't seem to have a problem with essentially forcing a 10/11/12 year old girl to have sex with a man old enough to be her grandfather, never mind her father.

Common sense and respect for all people no matter who they are. This is a good starting point in judging if you are a good human or not.
