Awesome photography by Joshua Hoffine, sans Photoshop

Your childhood fears have never looked so good. Joshua Hoffine is living proof you don't need Photoshop to create a fantastic composition. The photos below were all created using traditional lighting effects, fog machines and make-up.

"I stage my photo shoots like small movies, with sets, costumes, elaborate props, fog machines and special effects make-up. My images are not Photoshop collages. I use friends and family members as actors and crew."

It's great to see old school photography is not only still alive and well, but being executed with amazing style. There's something particularly disturbing about the last one, as for me it conjures up images of post apocalyptic nuclear war.

You can buy prints of the images below and more on his web site.

Every one I look at I have to remind myself that it wasn't shopped, then I'm impressed!

Very impressive (and sick at the same time). Once you look past the horror aspect at the pictures themselves, they're very interestingly made. He also has represented the imagination and fears of a small child, superbly.

I'm unpleasantly reminded of the tracts churches used to pass out freely back when I was in 2nd grade--my sisters had loads of them to bring to us kiddies to remind us of hell and scare us into going to church, blah, blah, blah. It worked.

I hope that little children didn't wind up w/ nightmares worse than what they were already having.

...in response to this comment by Gina Squitieri. Churches do this kind of thing??
No wonder you people all hate religion so much.

They do! And worse than that.

*Herbert W. Armstrong (Worldwide Church of God) was behind this kind of thing. That man hired a c-a-r-t-o-o-n artist to design the Worldwide Church of God tracts. The "artist" created some of the most grotesque images packed w/ lies-- all w/ HWA's stamp of approval. It was the images (not God) that worked "wonders" hauling people's arses into churches to "pay their tithes" for fear of burning in hell.

That's a pic that speaks volumes without saying a "Word."

Never said I hated religion--just how people twist God's Words to extract millions from poor people and put the fear of burning in hell in them, thinking they're doing God a service.

*Herbert W. Armstrong was brought under investigation later in his "ministry," and it was discovered that he was having involved in incestuous relationship w/ his own daughter (while damning his churchgoers to hell for not paying their tithes--"tithes" that he was using to support his lavish lifestyle).

This is a link to the cartoon artist Armstrong hired to do his tracts (these images look stupid to me now, but they didn't look stupid to me when I was seven).

Creative journey into the macabre.

I agree with Rodney's comment regarding representation of the imagination and fears of a small child.

Gina, I, too, did not know a church did that kind of thing. How scary is that??

Gong, I don't even want to know where you head is.
