3D modelling: Then and now
Mikey 12 commentsThis week I have been buried in 3D Studio Max 7 and feeling a little sorry for myself for still being 2 versions behind everyone else. And then I came upon this on Digg today, a picture taken in 1975, of a dude doing pretty much the same thing I have been doing all week (3D modeling and animation - not designing gliders!) except his interface looks a little less intimidating than the one I use. I don't know what software that is but I am going to call it 3D Studio Lame.
I always think how cool it would be to go back in time and show those guys a modern 3D application running on a computer that has more processing power than a wrist watch and a screen bigger than a deck of tarot cards. How blown away would they be?

Wednesday 23rd April 2008 | 04:36 PMbut i bet back in '75 it was a good program to have, prob the same in 30 years or some guy may be doing the same thing with an even better program for 3d work and they could be thinking the same how cool it would be to go back in time....

Wednesday 23rd April 2008 | 05:28 PMIt's quite impolite to call it lame just because of its age, do remember that your fancy programs have grown out from stuff as basic as this.

Well, I like sarcasm and usually I can figure it out (my friend's never figure mine out tho .... too dry ^^), but my sarcasm detector was pretty much cold and dead the whole article. It also felt kinda doubtful to post it just to make such a vague joke. On the other hand I've never got the feeling that the author could be this shallow so that might have been a sign that it's a farce. :)

Wednesday 23rd April 2008 | 05:47 PMHehe no farce I can assure you :-) I do have respect for what those guys were able to accomplish way back then. Some of the graphics apps I used 20+ years ago were awesome back then but ultimately useless now but it doesn't mean I forgot my roots.

I think you are confusing my term 'lame' with the people who use the software (I am one of them!) instead of the actual software itself. Today I am calling it 3D Studio Lame because by today's standards it would be lame. I am saying lame a lot not so I better send it here.

Thursday 24th April 2008 | 07:23 AMIn the immortal words of sombody: : "Superstar, dont forget, how you got, to where you are." Michael has got me trying to learn this flash editor called SWISH-2, and It's pushing me to my level of incompetance. Which is normally about where i'm performing at anyway...
What was I saying about Win 3.1?????

Tuesday 22nd April 2008 | 06:52 PM3D Studio Lame? Why? Maybe he is doing some computational fluid dynamics with his software. Can 3D Studio Max do this? I don't know.
