The fine line between good and bad movie parodies/spoofs.
The Movie Whore 5 comments
As The Movie Whore I have been focusing more of my time and energy to the art of film. If you look at what I have been posting lately it is easy to see. So once again I am using my movie whoredom to bring you my thoughts. Film is a medium that lends itself to many interpretations and there is no interpretation that is more fun or painful than the parody. It really is an art within an art to take a movie or a few movies and use them as your basis for comedic art. Let’s look at some of the brilliance of parody or spoof movies.
Airplane
Arguably (As I am sure the argument is about to begin.) the best spoof ever made. This is the film that gave the spoof it’s own genre. It was one of the first films you had to watch more than a few times to make sure you got all the jokes and I bet I am still missing one or two.
Airplane 2: The Sequel
I am sure I’m going to take some grief over including this one but this movie also gave us the golden rule of sequels. Don’t make them unless you can do it well. I liked the sequel. Not as much as the original but how often does a sequel live up to the original? Not often.
Hot Shots
Damn Funny. This movie still cracks me up from time to time. Go back and watch it again and realize that yes that’s Charlie Sheen and John Cryer together years before cracking us up every Monday night with Two ½ men. One of the funniest shows on TV. I wonder what would have happened had they not worked on this movie together?
Scary Movie
The first one was great. The Wayans brothers hit one out of the park. This movie has definite re-watch value but enough with the sequels already. The only thing good in 4 was the first ten minutes of the movie. Who knew Dr. Phil could be that funny?
I’m Gonna git you Sucka
Speaking of Wayans and family, this one is a classic. Funny as it is bad. I am so glad this had no commercial success or I know they would have done it death like they have with the Scary Movie Franchise.
Support your Local Sheriff
While I realize this movie was billed as western if you go back and look at it they were making fun of westerns. They just did not have a genre title for it back then. James Garner made this movie so much fun. It’s all in his delivery. The man is the master of delivering sarcasm. Just go back and watch Maverick. The go buy Support your Local Sheriff.
Blazing Saddles, Space Balls, Robinhood Men in Tights, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein, you get the picture.
I know you have been waiting to see when Mel Brooks would pop up. The man is the master of spoof. I saved the best for last. Mel has made a career of making us laugh and destroying good taste at the same time. Every one has there favorite Mel Brooks movie. For The Movie Whore I would have to go with History of The World Part I. Just something about a chariot chase while holding a giant joint that gets me every time.
Now if you are wondering what a bad parody is and I know you are, then watch Epic Movie. For a year I told my girlfirend that she owed me big time for that movie. She agreed. The I made her watch Xanadu, Now I owe her big time.
Well that’s it for this one. Until the next time “May the schwartz be with you.”
Rodney I had the same experience. It was just as crushing as when I found out there really was no Spinal Tap. I think that upset me more in my formative years than finding out about Santa Claus.

Jim, you forgot the great movies starring Leslie Nielson like The Naked Gun movies (spoofing police movies), Spy Hard (spoofing James Bond movies) and Wrongfully Accused, which apparently pokes fun at many movies that Harrison Ford has starred in.
They are all priceless!
Pretty sure Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz should be in here.

Tuesday 8th April 2008 | 10:25 PMWhen I was a young kid (like about 10) I was so disappointed to find out that there wasn't really a movie, "History of the World Part II". I remember going to the video store and insisting it must exist, because they had previews for it at the end of "History of the World Part I".
Someone should make that movie.
